I am a poet, fiction writer, painter and assemblage artist. For me, writing and the visual arts that I explore give back richly as I give my time, energy, attention and care to them. I love hiking, walking in places not yet taken over by housing, places less “developed.” And for me, creating is similar to that experience. I initiate the journey, but each piece, at various points, takes the lead and the process becomes a collaboration. The landscape draws me in one direction or another. If I am willful, with a pre-determined path or destination in mind, the trail may not suddenly end, but I stop seeing as clearly what is around or before me. I become less likely to notice if the vegetation wilts, the ground flattens, the animals fall over and stiffen. To truly see, I have to be open, receptive. So each venture (walk or creation) requires an ongoing and shifting relationship and a partnership of sorts between me and what is not strictly me that I enter and/or shape.
